As promised, Lexus today unveiled a prototype electric car. This is called LF-Z Electrified and heralds the future of the manufacturer in terms of design and technology.
This SUV is based on an architecture that was developed exclusively for emission-free vehicles. The placement of the battery in the middle underground and the motor in the stern resulted in a design that combines a downward-facing “nose” with a raised stern.
The concept is 4.88 meters long, 1.96 meters wide and 1.60 meters high with a wheelbase of 2.95 meters.
At the front, there is now an anvil-shaped radiator grille bulging with a split effect on the sides ensure a transition with the darker panels under the optical modules.
The latter, very fine, retains the illuminated signature in the striking Lexus comma. The wings show sharp edges and several folds.
The rear is simpler with a strip of light and a diffuser that emphasizes the width of the vehicle. The kit gives the machine a slightly aggressive look, supported by black wheel arches and roof pillars.
The promise of natural leadership
Lexus has said he wants to make driving the LF-Z Electrified as innate as possible, particularly inspired by the relationship between a rider and his horse. As a result, the shape of the steering wheel is reminiscent of the reins, which is also reminiscent of Tesla’s legendary yoke steering wheel.
All devices, from the digital dashboard to the multimedia screen, are combined in one unit on the steering wheel with three screens in front of the driver. The controls are on the steering wheel. According to Lexus, this decision will be made on board future vehicles. The steering wheel is 100% electric.
The phone’s flat design and panoramic roof improve the driver’s view and create a sense of space on board. The touchpad in the middle of the roof enables the occupants to communicate between the front and rear rows. The latter has reclining seats.
The SUV is equipped with a voice assistant and artificial intelligence that can learn from its user to make more relevant suggestions, such as what methods to follow.
Lexus LF-Z High performance
The electric motor of the LF-Z Electrified generates 544 hp and 700 Nm of torque. Each of the four wheels is integrated into the new Lexus Direct4 system and directly connected to the engine. The torque is electronically distributed differently depending on the conditions.
Despite the mass of 2,100 kg, according to Lexus, which indicates a top speed of 200 km / h, the concept can increase from 0 to 100 km / h in 3 seconds. The liquid-cooled 90 kWh lithium-ion battery offers a range of up to 600 km in the WLTP cycle and, according to the manufacturer, supports a charging capacity of 150 kW.
As with other brands, this concept ushered in a new electric attack at Lexus. The Toyota Group’s flagship subsidiary plans to launch 20 new models (including restyling) by 2025, including a variety of electric cars, as well as hybrids and simple plug-in hybrids.
To accelerate the trend, Lexus will open a new technology and business center in Shimoyama, Japan in March 2024. In addition, Nothing is said about a potential production vehicle that is directly derived from the LF-Z Electrified.
