After the first intrusion into the world of electrics a few years ago, Ford is making a strong comeback with a great vehicle potential, the Mustang Mach-E. This show dedicated to hybrid and electric vehicles, Mustang Mach-E meets the Jaguar I-Pace, the only electric model to have received the title of the car of the year in 2019. The fight promises to be fierce.

The latest Mustang represents a sacrilege because it is not a coupe or a convertible but an SUV, and especially this one is electric! We are a thousand miles from the bewitching sound of the American V8. For its return, Ford is making its mark and entering the electric family SUV segment where it will face one of the oldest players in the category, the Jaguar I-Pace, honored with the title of the car of the year 2019, which is still unpublished to this day. A model which also represents a pioneer for Jaguar since the brand will become 100% electric around 2025.

SUVs Design

On the side of Ford, we try to justify the name Mustang by taking up certain characteristic features of the models struck by the famous wild horse as evidenced by the tapered headlights, the curved wings, the roof drop, or the rear lights with three vertical bars. you will have noticed that this Mach-E is not adorned with the Ford logo but only with the Mustang signature. The whole is original and relatively dynamic within particular a very large full grille.

The Jaguar I-Pace is also far from going unnoticed as it stands out for its positioning halfway between a sedan and an SUV as evidenced by its height of only 1.57 m, while the width is imposing with 1, 90 m. The overall look is out of this world, and is definitely working. Appeared in 2018, the Jaguar I-Pace has not aged in any way.

Our pick: Jaguar I-Pace

Onboard: futuristic versus classic

The dashboard of the Mustang Mach e impresses with its enormous vertical screen. Tesla had better watch out.

When you step aboard the Mustang Mach-E, you are amazed. Your gaze will literally be captivated by the huge 15.5-inch central screen that sits in the middle of the dashboard. It works like a smartphone but requires time to adapt as the features are numerous and sometimes complex to understand. It is coupled with 100% digital instrumentation that takes the appearance of a digital bar grouping together the main driving information. Apart from that, the design of the dashboard which recalls the coupes with the double bass is refined but we regret a very average quality of materials.

Much more classic presentation aboard the Jaguar, but the quality is there.

Quite the opposite of the Jaguar I-Pace which displays a dashboard with a more classic design than that of its rival, but the materials are much more rewarding. Technology is also part of the game even if it is less exuberant with obviously digital instrumentation and a modernized multimedia screen during the recent restyling which hosts the Pivi Pro system, inaugurated on the last Land Rover Defender which allows gaining in speed. and fluidity.

Our pick : Mustang Mach-E

The Mustang Mach-E and Jaguar I-Pace are only 3cm apart (4.71m vs. 4.68m), yet there are real differences when it comes to practicality. Thus, the British SUV has a much more generous trunk with a capacity ranging between 656 and 1,453 liters + 27 liters under the hood, while that of the Mustang varies between 402 and 1,420 liters to which must be added the 81 liters. under the front cover.

With respective wheelbases close to 3 meters, our two rivals benefit from generous habitability. In this game, however, it is the Mustang that is the most welcoming with more knee room, aided in this by a perfectly flat floor, which allows easy daily use.

Our pick: Jaguar I-Pace

Engines: greater diversity for the Mach-E

This is surely one of the strong points of the Mustang since it is available in a wide range of engines and batteries. Thus, the basic version is rear-wheel drive. It exists with a battery of 76 kWh and 269 hp (range 440 km) or another of 99 kWh and 294 hp (range 600 km). Then there is the four-wheel drive. We find these same batteries, 76 and 99 kWh, and the powers here are 269 and 351 hp. Autonomies allow you to travel 400 and 540 km. The First Edition launch version is equipped with a 99 kWh battery and 351 hp engine combination.

Less choice for the Jaguar I-Pace with two engines. The electric feline is always driven by two motors whose cumulative powers are 320 or 400 hp powered by a 90 kWh battery which allows it in both cases to claim a range of 470 km.

Our pick: Mustang Mach-E

Technology: newer, the Mach-E is better placed

The Mustang Mach-E has a very futuristic interior and this modernity does not stop there since it drives the point home with the latest generation of the Sync 4 multimedia system which works like a kind of artificial intelligence with a very advanced voice command or transmit destinations from the phone.

But that’s not all, since access to the Mach-E is by entering a code on the door pillar or by using your phone as a key. It is also possible to benefit from a modem with a free subscription for 10 years. Equipment not available on the Jaguar, much less innovative in this area but our two competitors are full of driving aids with, for example, adaptive cruise control, cameras for parking or recognition of traffic signs.

Our pick: Mustang Mach-E

On the road: very close

If you think getting behind the wheel of this Mach-E will remind you of driving a “traditional” Mustang, then think again because it has nothing to do with it. The Mach-E, however, offers very convincing performance in terms of comfort, efficiency, and more efficiency. Like all-electric vehicles, this Mustang turns flat, is quiet, and has plenty of instant torque. Too bad management does not provide enough information. The dynamic driving is not very pleasant but the efficiency is there and there as evidenced by the 0 to 100 km / h shot in 5.8s. A good performance considering the weight of this Mach-E which approaches or even exceeds 2 tons depending on the version.

The driving sensations are relatively similar on board the Jaguar, even if the lap times of the most powerful version are even more breathtaking with 4.8 s over the same exercise. The comfort is very good and so is the handling. Our two opponents are marked in the breeches. The same is true of consumption with respective averages of 21 kWh and 23 kWh / 100 km, i.e. real autonomy around 400 km.

As for the full recharge, it will take for the Jaguar between 106 min on a 50 kW terminal and 39 hours at home. For the Mustang with the 99 kW battery, it will be 116 min and 48 hours under the same conditions, but this rear is able to withstand loads of up to 250 kW, which is not the case with the Jaguar.

Our pick: Mustang Mach-E

The winner: Mustang Mach-E

The Mustang Mach-E is making a remarkable entry into the electric world due to its futuristic interior, its wide range of engines and batteries, its highly technological equipment, its behavior but also its efficiency allowing it to travel serenely over long distances. The Jaguar i-Pace does not deserve very similar road qualities but it is penalized by a slightly lower dynamism and by a lower autonomy. But above all, the British SUV is much more expensive since its prices are between 70,350 and 94,600 € while the Mustang is accessible from 48,990 € and 69,500 € for the top of the range. A hell of a difference that is difficult to justify.
